Hyeres on April 29, 2018. The paralympic sailor, Rafa Andarias, managed to get on the podium and hang the bronze medal of the World Cup 2018 that was held in the French town of Hyeres from 22 to 29 April. Andarias goes from less to more in a competition in which he started in the fifth place and he passed with a note on the last day, by signing a third place that took him to the third step of the podium. In this way, Andarias reaped a historical feat for Spain in disabled sailing to win the first metal in a World Cup. It should be noted that unlike the Olympic classes, who make the World Series, the 2.4mR disabled class after the Hyeres has finished their participation in the 2018 World Cup.
The shifty conditions of the French waters put to the test the best world disabled sailors, among them, Rafa Andarias who began his international debut in 2018. The member of the Club Náutico de Jávea, the only Spaniard in the category, started the competition in the fifth position. Throughout the competition, the alicante sailor added good partials that quickly boosted him to the top positions. On the basis of regularity, he was able to climb positions and position himself in the fight for the medals.
In the last race of the event known as Medal Race and whose score was worth double, the Italian sailor, Antonio Squizatto, who was in second place in the general classification, was disqualified for premature departure. This fact together with the good position of the Spaniard who finished the medal in the third position, gave the bronze medal finally to Rafa Andarias, who achieved the first metal for Spain in history in a World Cup of adapted sailing.
As for the overall classification of the 2.4mR World Cup, the French Damien Seguin and Bruno Jourdren achieved the gold and silver respectively, while the bronze went to the Spanish Rafa Andarias.
“It is a privilege for me to be able to achieve for Spain the first bronze medal in the World Cup of sailing” – declared Andarias after getting on the podium.
The next appointment for Rafa Andarias will be the European Championship to be held in June in Kiel, Germany, a competition in which he won in 2016.
